At Change Begins Today CBT Ltd, we have a range of highly skilled and experienced therapists based at different locations. We understand that for many people, choosing to access therapy can be a scary and difficult decision, and we want to support you to make the choice that is right for you. You will have the chance to speak to our Senior Therapist, Sharon Brennan on a free screening call on the phone about the challenges you are facing and how therapy might be helpful to you. She will talk to you about the options available, any specific needs you have about when or where your therapy might happen, and what to expect. You will be able to talk to your potential therapist on the phone prior to committing to an appointment if you wish to do so. We understand that who you choose to work with is important. There are no hidden fees, and there are no requirements for you to 'block book' sessions. Therapy with us is individualised because people are all different. Our therapists bring a multitude of skills and experience. All hold professional accreditation relevant to their area of expertise. We have therapists who are experienced in working with adults, children and young people, people with additional learning, processing or neurodiveristy needs. We do our best to match you to the right therapist for you because we understand the importance of the working relationship between you in helping you achieve your goals.

We are able to offer 'Walk and Talk' sessions from our peaceful woodland location at Ransomwood, NG21 0HJ. We are also launching a Mindfulness in Nature Group to be run by our highly experienced and skilled Mindfulness Based Cognitve Therapist, Sarah Malyon and co-facilitated by our Senior Therapist, Sharon Brennan. This group will launch in Octobber 2022.
All our therapists are experienced at working with people, whether that is with you directly, or your child or teenager. We understand that every person is different and that their needs, and the approach that is best for them will vary depending on their situation, experience and age. We aim to help every client become more aware of their thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and to learn new ways to repsond and cope when difficult events happen. We know that people react differently to life events and stressors such as trauma, illness, bereavement, relationship breakdown, bullying and stress. Social demands can feel overwhelming. Family setting and support networks will influence responses. Our role is to work with you towards your goals for change.
Our Therapists:
Sharon Brennan is our Senior Therapist, Supervisor and Director of Change Begins Today CBT Ltd. She has worked in mental health since 1992, and is a highly experienced therapist. She has worked as a CBT therapist since 1999, completing her MSc in CBT and becoming accredited with the BABCP in 2003. She has worked in specialist psychotherapy services in the NHS as well as community settings, early intervention and staff support teams. She has previously been a Visiting Therapist at Nottingham's Centre for Trauma, Resilience and Growth under Steve Regel MBE. She has worked at the Priory Clinic, Nottingham and in private practice since 2007 offering therapy to self-referring clients, GP and Psychiatrist referrals, welfare schemes, Occupational Health, Rehabilitation and Private Health Insurance providers. Sharon has a broad range of experience and is able to work skilfully with people. She oversees clinical practice at Change Begins Today CBT Ltd as a BABCP Accredited Supervisor. Sharon now works in private clinical practice, and as an Accredited Supervisor of other clinicians. She also provides supervision in a CAMHS team in the NHS and is an Associate Lecturer at University of Derby on the topics of CBT and Clinical Supervision. She provides CBT, ACT and EMDR therapies.
Sarah Malyon qualified with an MA in Social Work in 1999 from the University of Nottingham, followed by an PG Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy from the University of Birmingham in 2009. She is a UKCP registered Psychotherapist, with over 20 years Local Authority or NHS experience. She is particularly interested in attachment and trauma, and has gained qualifications in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) as ways of supporting people to manage the long term effects of complex trauma. Sarah has had a personal mindfulness practice for over 15 years, and she and her dog are passionate believers in the gently transformative effects of mindfulness in nature. Sarah is also an experienced group facilitator and trainer. She brings compassion, warmth, and gratitude for her opportunity to introduce the benefits of mindfulness to a wider population.
Vicky Cockerill is an accredited CBT therapist who is currently Interim Head of Discipline in Associate Healthcare Practice, Nursing Apprenticeships, Health, Psychology and Social Care at the University of Derby. She is a strong advocate for high quality training and supervision for therapists to enable them to deliver the same level of therapy and care to clients. She has previously worked in the NHS and continues to have a small private practice. She achieved an MSC in CBT specialising in children and young people in 2013. Vicky worked in the NHS as a mental health and learning disability nurse for 20 years. She has worked in a variety of settings including adult assessment and treatment services and community child and adolescent services. Vicky is experienced in working with individuals whom experience developmental difficulties and neurodiversity including autistic spectrum disorder, learning difficulties and ADHD. She is also experienced in delivering supervision and training in this area.
Sarah Benson completed her Post Graduate Diploma in CBT in 2013. She currently works part time in private practice and part time in the NHS in a CAMHS setting supervising staff in the delivery of CBT and CBT informed interventions. She works with a wide range of presentations including GAD, Worry, Panic, Depression, OCD, Trauma and PTSD. She offers both CBT and ACT therapies. She has a broad background in corporate and charitable environments prior to training in Psychology and Psychotherapy. Sarah brings warmth, experience and a pragmatic approach, providing clients with goal focussed therapy to help them achieve their desired change.
Katie Burgess joined us in 2020. She studied at Liverpool University and gained a psychology degree in 2003. She worked as an Assistant Psychologist in the areas of Learning Disability, Autism and Looked After Children before joining the NHS and beginning work in Adult Mental Health Services in 2010. She Accredited as a CBT Therapist with the BABCP in 2013, and continues to work in both the NHS and private sectors. She has a special interest in OCD, Trauma, GAD, Panic, Low Self Esteem, Depression and Phobias. She is also an EMDR therapist.
Rebecca Stevenson acts in an advisory and support role for our Training and Development Team. She currently leads a service developing psychological early interventions for children and young people in Northamptonshite Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and supporting schools in developing their own support systems for young people. Rebecca began training in 1992 before qualifying as a School Nurse, and later achieving her MSc in CBT for Children and Young People. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience in operational management, training development and delivery.
Gemma Thorley initially trained in Person Centred Therapy, achieving her MSc in this approach. Having subsequently trained in CBT and achieved accreditation with the BABCP in 2009, she continues to utilise both approaches in a fluid way to meet the needs of individual clients. Gemma has worked in the NHS, private sector and Occupational Health Services. She has a warm and positive approach and has a particular interest in working with people with Anxiety, Panic, Worry, Stress and Depression. She has recently undertaken further specialised training in CBT for Insomnia.
